Test for independence between marks and points of marked point processes
نویسنده
چکیده
Ecological data often involve measurements taken at irregularly spaced locations, e.g., the heights of trees in a forest. A useful approach to model such data is via a marked point process, where the marks (i.e., measurements) and points (i.e., locations) are often assumed to be independent. While a convenient assumption, this may not hold in practice. Schelather et al. (2003) proposed a simulation based approach to test this assumption. The purpose of this paper is to present a new method for testing the assumption of independence between the marks and points. Instead of considering a simulation approach, we derive analytical results that allow the test to be implemented via a conventional χ statistics. We illustrate the use of our approach by an application to a desert plant data example.

On Independence and Separability between Points and Marks of Marked Point Processes
An important problem in statistical methods for marked point processes (MPPs) is to evaluate the relationship between points and marks, which can be developed under either the concept of independence or the concept of separability. Although both have been used, the connection between these two concepts is still unclear in the literature. The present article provides a way to evaluate such a con...
متن کاملOn the local odds ratio between points and marks in marked point processes
Marked point processes are widely used stochastic models for representing a finite number of natural hazard events located in space and time and their data often associate event measurements (i.e. marks) with event locations (i.e. points). An interesting statistical problem of marked point processes is to measure and estimate the localized dependence between points and marks. To solve this prob...
متن کاملPrediction of the Sample Variance of Marks for a Marked Spatial Point Process by the Threshold Method
We discuss the prediction of the sample variance of marks of a marked spatial point process on a continuous space by the threshold method. The threshold method is a statistical prediction using only the number of points with marks exceeding a given threshold value. Mase (1996) considered the method in the framework of spatial point processes on a discrete space and Sakaguchi and Mase (2003) ext...
متن کاملA note on testing separability in spatial-temporal marked point processes.
In environmental risk analysis, it is common to assume the stochastic independence (or separability) between the marks associated with the random events of a spatial-temporal point process. Schoenberg (2004, Biometrics 60, 471-481) proposed several test statistics for this hypothesis and used simulated data to evaluate their performance. He found that a Cramér-von Mises-type test is powerful to...
متن کاملDisentangling mark/point interaction in marked-point processes
In many spatial situations, not only do the point locations of mark variables (e.g. tree heights) play a key role in the underlying process generating mechanism, but there can be interdependence between the marks and points themselves. Although Monte Carlo frequency-domain analyses can separate mark and point structure, theoretical advances for marks have so far related to the conditional mark ...
